iPhone Apps

Does your phone runs Apps?

The popularity of Apple's App Store has vaulted mobile apps to prominence. We as techies know that mobile phones have been tiny PCs for years now. The difference today is the buzz and visibility around apps. The idea that you can add to your phone's powers has gone mainstream.

With 100,000 apps, the iPhone certainly has the most apps available, but there's no lack of choice on other platforms. Google's Android phones have more than 10,000.

There are thousands for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, and Symbian phones, and a couple of hundred for the Palm Pre and Pixi.

The App experience isn't the same on every phone. Apple makes all their apps available in one store; BlackBerry and Windows Mobile apps are scattered across the Web. You'd be hard-pressed to find good 3D games on Android or Palm WebOS, but on the iPhone, they're plentiful.

There are several great alternative Web browsers available for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile. Apple forbids that whole product category on the iPhone. (What Apple calls "alternative browsers" are just skins over Safari.)

As App developers, VisionFriendly.com tries to make our apps work similarly on all platforms. But our primary focus is the iPhone. That is where the popularity is and that is where we feel the future is.

With more than 100,000 iPhone Apps, almost all are available through the iTunes App Store. (To get apps from outside the store, you have to hack your phone and expose it to security risks.)

100,000 Apps! That's an amazing rate of growth, and it shows how rich the iPhone platform is. We want to be part of that growth. We have acquired the Apple developers software kit that allows us to tap into the full capabilities of the iPhone. So let us know if there is an particular application you would like your customers or the world to have.
