Are
you asking, "How do search engines determine
where my site ends up in their results?"
All of the major search engines,
MSN, Google, and Yahoo build their index of sites
using spiders to crawl the web, finding new and
changed information. This information is then processed
by the search engines using complex algorithms
to determine which sites are most relevant to the
search terms entered.
To get your site a top organic
search result for any given keyword there
are several factors to address: on site code and
content changes, as well as offsite link popularity
and rankings.
There
are three main "On site"
areas to focus on when Optimizing
your website for organic searches.
| 1.) |
One
of the most important code change
for search engine optimization
is the Title
Tag.
Go to Google and
make a search for any particular
key word. If you look at the top
ten entries in that search you
will see that all of them have
this key word in the title, sometimes
more than once. So when writing
your title tag, it is helpful to
have your best keywords included
in the title tag, and not only
in the tag, near the beginning
of the title.
|
| 2.) |
The
next tag that has to be done
is the Description
tag.
Many search engines use the description
tag as a way to tell the searchers
what the page is about. This tag should
be well written to entice visitors
to click onto your site, but the description
also must contain the important keywords
that you wish to highlight.
|
| 3.) |
The
final piece of the on site optimization
is generating relevant key-terms for
your website. These should be
2 to three words long separated
by commas. If you are in
a highly competitive market,
it may be very difficult to get
any visibility on the search
engines. Which means that we
will need to research more niche
market terms that can
include things like city or county
names to narrow your competition.

The
three sections of on site code changes listed
above are all known as Meta Tags. Meta Tags are
hidden code placed in the Head section of your
HTML page. It
is very important to write an effective description
and Title tag if you expect to be found in most
search engines. Note that Meta Tags are not the only
thing search engines will look at when ranking your
sites - some search engines will ignore META Tags
completely, but they are still the most important
aspect of any internet marketing campaign.
We may want to add content to
your pages that references the key terms you select
if they do not already appear throughout your text. And
adding new pages can make your site more relevant
to the search engines as well.
